Honest conversations from the chairs on the other side of the door

The Handoff Podcast brings together family business leaders and their next-generation successors for conversations about passing on leadership, ownership, and legacy. Through both generations’ perspectives, the show explores how families navigate succession and prepare their businesses for the future.

Founders, next-gen principals, families, advisors, leadership teams and board chairs talk about what a generational transition is actually like: the decisions, the disagreements, and the turning points that rarely make it into a case study.

What each episode covers

Succession planning

When the next generation is ready, and how the current one steps back.

Ownership transition

How control, shares and wealth move from one generation to the next.

Next-generation leadership

Preparing successors to lead, and earning the trust of the people around them.

Governance

Boards, family councils, and how decisions get made as the family grows.

Estate planning

The conversations a family needs to have before anyone drafts the documents.

Family dynamics

Working together as a family, hard conversations, and keeping relationships intact.

Todd Garretson

Host, The Handoff Podcast Founder, CircleMakers

Todd founded CircleMakers to advise family and privately held businesses on succession, leadership, ownership and governance.

He is a third-generation owner in a family business that has been passed down across three generations, so he knows what it means to be a successor finding his place while an older generation works out how to let go.

“This isn’t a framework I read about. It’s the hardest work of my own life, turned into a practice.”

On The Handoff Podcast, he brings that experience to conversations with the people facing the same decisions.

Yes. You review your episode before it goes out.
What stays off the record?
Anything private to your family, and anything about your business that isn’t already public.
Is this a consulting session?
No. It’s a podcast recording, not a consulting appointment.

Is your family business planning a generational transition, currently undergoing one, or has it completed one in the past?
